Our experienced team of providers uses microneedling to stimulate new collagen in your skin, which in turn can reduce fine lines, minimize the appearance of scars and improve your skin tone. SkinPen microneedling is a fan-favorite at our Mount Pleasant med spa because it can create more youthful skin on the face and neck by harnessing your body’s own ability to heal.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling taps into your skin’s natural healing process. By creating thousands of ultra-controlled micro-channels, SkinPen jump-starts collagen and elastin production—the two proteins that keep your skin firm, smooth, and radiant. Our team of Physician Assistants and Licensed Aestheticians have years of extensive medical experience and perform every session with precision.

What makes SkinPen different?

SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling system that uses single-use, 14-pin cartridges that oscillate up to 7,000 times per second, creating vertical channels with uniform depth. Unlike heat-based treatments, SkinPen works through controlled micro-injuries alone, making it safe and effective for nearly every skin tone and type—including those who may not be ideal candidates for other resurfacing methods.

We also offer our Mount Pleasant microneedling patients the option to boost each treatment session by infusing Ariessence™ growth-factor serum (rich in stem cell-derived peptides) into the open channels in their skin, for even smoother recovery and an even more noticeable glow.

SkinPen Microneedling Treatment Areas

Most patients start with the face, but SkinPen can also benefit these additional areas:

  • Neck and décolletage
  • Hands and forearms
  • Surgical or traumatic scars elsewhere on the body
  • Above-knee or tummy stretch marks

Who’s an Ideal Candidate?

Adults in good health who hope for smoother skin texture or scar revision typically are a good fit for SkinPen microneedling treatments. You should please postpone your session if you have active cystic acne, uncontrolled eczema, or are on isotretinoin therapy.

SkinPen microneedling is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding; if needed, we can discuss alternative treatments, like our custom facials, during your consultation.

Your SkinPen Microneedling Treat: What to Expect

  1. Minimizing discomfort: Numbing cream rests for 20 minutes while you relax.
  2. Microneedling application: Your provider glides the sterile pen in systematic passes, adjusting depth by zone—deeper over scars, lighter around your eyes. Because you are numbed beforehand, it should not be painful; most patients describe the treatment as a vibrating tickle.
  3. Serum infusion (optional): Ariessence is dripped and needled in, bathing your cells in powerful reparative peptides.
  4. Calming mask + SPF finish. Expect redness and sensitivity for 1-4 days as your skin heals and rejuvenates.

Microneedling Downtime and Aftercare

Immediately after treatment, your skin will feel warm and rosy with a tight sensation, similar to a moderate sunburn. It’s important that you take special care of your newly treated skin during this initial phase and follow the aftercare instructions we provide you at your treatment.

Over the next 1-2 days, the pinkness will fade but your skin may develop a sandpaper-like texture, so avoid sweaty workouts, makeup, and active ingredients like retinoids or acids that can irritate the skin.

By day 3 and beyond, you can resume your gentle cleanser and moisturizer routine, and makeup application is safe again. Some flaking or peeling is completely normal during this healing phase, but please resist the urge to pick at your skin.

Most patients are event-ready by day 3; some resume public-facing activities the very next morning with a bit of tinted SPF.

Results

Many patients enjoy a noticeable improvement in their skin once the initial redness calms. Collagen remodeling, however, peaks around 12 weeks. A three-treatment series yields visible scar softening and fine-line smoothing; annual single-session “boosters” can help maintain momentum.

Here are a few of the benefits our Mount Pleasant microneedling patients have reported:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Gradual fading of dark spots and post-breakout marks
  • Firmer feel as new collagen is produced over the 90 days
  • Better absorption of skincare actives through renewed skin surface

Safety & Side Effects

Temporary redness, pinpoint bleeding, or swelling are expected following a microneedling treatment. Infection or pigment change is exceedingly rare when proper technique and sterile disposables are used. At True Beauty Aesthetics, all microneedling sessions are performed by our expert estheticians, who bring at least a decade of experience to each medical-grade skin treatment.

Popular Treatment Pairings

SkinPen is great on its own, but many of our patients love to combine it with other treatments to see additional benefits:

SkinPen Microneedling FAQs

Topical lidocaine dulls most sensation; patients report mild discomfort, at most. Areas over bone (forehead, jawline) can feel a bit more sensitive for a few seconds, but are tolerable.

Home rollers max out around 0.25 mm, which barely scratches the stratum corneum. SkinPen, on the other hand, reaches up to 2.5 mm, stimulating the dermis where collagen is made, all while maintaining sterile, perpendicular channels. At-home rollers also pose infection risks due to inadequate sterilization and can cause irregular micro-tears that may worsen skin texture rather than improve it, so please trust your skin treatments to a qualified professional, like the team here at True Beauty Aesthetics.

Yes. Because no heat or light energy is involved, SkinPen carries minimal risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially when performed by a provider who has experience specifically with microneedling for darker skin tones. We often recommend microneedling over lasers for Fitzpatrick IV–VI patients.

Some experience light flaking or “grit” around day 2–3 as old cells shed. It’s subtler than a medium chemical peel—most coworkers won’t notice.

Mineral makeup is safe after 24 hours following a microneedling session, provided the brushes are clean. Waiting 48 hours maximizes serum penetration and minimizes risk of infection.

Mechanical needling itself is generally safe, but we postpone treatment until after delivery because the healing effects haven’t been extensively studied in pregnant skin. Ask about our pregnancy-safe facials in the meantime.
